Why I Moved to Port Alberni: A Great Place to Call Home
If you're considering a move to Vancouver Island, let me tell you why Port Alberni should be at the top of your list. I've lived in this beautiful town since 2016, and I can't imagine living anywhere else. Here's why Port Alberni is the perfect place for your next real estate investment or your forever home.
Why I Chose Port Alberni
Before settling in Port Alberni, I lived in Victoria and Vancouver. Originally from Northern BC (Smithers) I did not grow up on the Island. However, my parents moved here in 2015, which meant I spent a lot of time visiting them from Vancouver and Victoria. Initially, I wasn't sold on the area, but that quickly changed.
In 2016, I was living in a basement suite in Victoria and expecting my first child. I decided to take a leap of faith and buy a house in Port Alberni. So many years later, I couldn't be happier with my decision. The city has a unique charm, and I’ve fallen in love with its welcoming community and stunning surroundings.
One of the biggest draws of Port Alberni is its incredible natural beauty. Nestled in a valley, the area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're into mountain biking, surfing in nearby Tofino, climbing, ice climbing, or mountaineering, there's something for everyone. The region is also famous for its excellent foraging opportunities and fertile soil, making it a gardener's paradise.
Port Alberni boasts some of the most fabulous lakes in the region. For instance, Nahmint Lake offers a serene escape where you can enjoy a sandy beach and beautiful weather without the crowds. There are numerous lakes and recreational spots within a 20-minute drive of town, providing endless opportunities for outdoor activities.
The Natural Beauty of Port Alberni
Since I moved here, Port Alberni has seen significant growth and development. The downtown core has been revitalized with new restaurants, breweries, and shops. Three breweries have opened since I moved here, including one with a rooftop patio, adding to the vibrant local scene.
As a real estate agent, I witness many people moving from the city to Port Alberni, bringing with them big dreams and goals. They are excited to find a place they can afford and where business spaces and rentals are reasonably priced. This influx of new residents with fresh ideas is contributing to the town's dynamic and exciting atmosphere.
A Thriving Community
While Port Alberni offers a small-town feel, it is conveniently close to larger cities like Nanaimo and Courtney. It's just an hour to Nanaimo, where you can access amenities like Costco. Despite being a smaller center, Port Alberni doesn't lack essential services, including excellent schools and healthcare facilities.
